Position Overview
We are seeking a highly competent UAV Design Engineer with practical expertise in aerial vehicle design, aerostructures and computational fluid dynamics. Using SolidWorks and suitable analysis tools, you will own the aerodynamic and structural design cycle of fixed-wing, rotary-wing or hybrid VTOL platforms, according to project needs. You will take concepts through parametric modelling, simulation, prototype validation and production release, working closely with electronics, propulsion, manufacturing and flight-test teams.
Key Responsibilities
• Full Vehicle Design: Create comprehensive 3D models of airframes, wings, empennage, rotor systems, and payload integration using SolidWorks, ensuring parametric master models and robust top-down assembly structures.
• Aerodynamic Analysis: Set up, run, and interpret CFD studies (external/internal flow) using either SolidWorks Flow Simulation or similar software. Optimise designs by taking into account aeroelastic principles couple with aerodynamic and structural analysis.
• Structural & Multi-Physics Simulation: Utilise SolidWorks Simulation or similar software to validate structural integrity, modal response, and composite laminate layups, often feeding pressure loads directly from CFD results.
• Performance Tuning: Iterate on geometry based on CFD post-processing (streamlines, pressure plots, force/moment coefficients) to meet endurance, stability, and speed requirements.
• Prototype to Production: Generate detailed 2D drawings, manage BOMs, and collaborate with the prototyping team to transition verified designs into flight-worthy hardware.
• Documentation: Prepare design review packages, test plans, and compliance documentation in line with airworthiness standards.
Qualifications & Skills
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Minimum 5 years of proven, hands-on UAV or aircraft design experience.
• Expert-level SolidWorks proficiency: advanced surfacing, large assembly management, and design tables.
• Demonstrated CFD competency: Ability to set up accurate external aerodynamics simulations (compressible/incompressible, rotating regions for propellers) using SolidWorks Flow Simulation or comparable tools directly linked to SolidWorks geometry.
• Strong understanding of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, and lightweight structures.
• Experience with composite design and manufacturing methods is a significant advantage.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and communicate complex technical information clearly.
Additional Advantages
• Composite laminate design, appropriate failure criteria and hands-on knowledge of carbon-fibre manufacturing and bonded joints.
• Experience with aeroelastic analysis, rotor or propeller aerodynamics, hybrid VTOL integration, or specialist CFD and structural solvers.
• Experience correlating simulations with wind-tunnel, structural or flight-test results, and preparing airworthiness evidence.
