UrbaQuantum
UrbaQuantum is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project focused on transforming urban water quality monitoring and management through an integrated, data-driven approach. The project addresses the increasing pressures on urban water systems from climate change, pollution, and ageing infrastructure by combining advanced sensor technologies, predictive models, and decision-support tools. UrbaQuantum aims to create a resilient, evidence-based framework that improves water security, enhances environmental and public health, and supports sustainable urban development.

In UrbaQuantum, CYRIC | Cyprus Research & Innovation Centre Ltd acts as the project coordinator, providing leadership and strategic direction across all project activities. CYRIC drives project planning, stakeholder engagement and collaboration among academic, industry and water utility partners from multiple countries. As coordinator, CYRIC supports the seamless integration of research outputs, ensures quality and compliance with Horizon Europe processes and promotes the project’s results to relevant audiences across Europe.
UrbaQuantum runs from June 2025 to May 2029 with EU funding of approximately €4.99 million under the Horizon Europe programme. The project brings together 18 partners from 6 European countries to deliver a holistic solution to urban water challenges. Core activities include developing novel sensors for pathogens, microplastics and emerging contaminants, creating models to better understand sewer overflows and water interactions, and building an Urban Water Platform that supports real-time decision-making by utilities and policymakers. These tools and methodologies will be tested and demonstrated in real-world urban contexts, aiming to strengthen water system resilience and enable cost-effective, data-informed management practices.
